Dream Academy News | The Other Wes Moore

Thursday April 29, 2010

Two men named Wes Moore were born in Baltimore city around the same time.  One became a Rhodes Scholar, White House Fellow, and Wall Street hotshot; the other murdered a Baltimore police officer and will spend the rest of his life in prison for felony murder.  This compelling story is the subject of a new book debuted on Oprah, NPR, and Meet the Press entitled “The Other Wes Moore:  One Man Two Fates”.

The author, the first Wes Moore has generously offered to partner with the U.S. Dream Academy by donating 5% of the book’s proceeds to fund our work breaking the cycle of incarceration.

“I am proud to support the important and successful work of the U.S. Dream Academy.  As someone who has worked with incarcerated youth for over a decade, I have seen firsthand how easily kids can slip through the cracks and end up in juvenile detention centers without impactful and timely intervention.

I also know through documenting the life of the other Wes, a father – and recently a grandfather – who is in prison for life, how devastating it can be for children with incarcerated parents, and how these kids often develop the mindset early on that they too will likely end up in jail.

We need to break the cycle.  We need for those kids to believe that they have the ability and the right to dream bigger dreams.  I applaud Diane and her incredibly dedicated staff at the Dream Academy for their hard work over the past twelve years, and am humbled to be able to contribute to their bright future, and the lives they will change.”

The Dream Academy is honored by Mr. Moore’s generosity.   The story of these two men’s lives masterfully illustrates the difference mentors and a caring community of adults can have in the lives of young people when we encourage them to dream big and provide for them the resources to achieve those dreams.
